Women, It’s Time to Focus on You!

By Sophia L. Thomas, DNP, FNP-BC, PPCNP-BC, FNAP, FAANP

After more than a year of social distancing, lockdowns and social separation, it is time to reinvest in your health. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly 15% of adult women in the United States are in fair or poor health. In fact, nearly 80%of women put their own health needs last, behind children, pets, elders and spouses. It’s time to change that.

Today kicks off National Women’s Health Week, a time devoted to ensuring more women make their own health a priority. This year, celebrate by making your health a priority, and kickstart your personal recovery from COVID-19 by following these tips:

  • Make an appointment with your local nurse practitioner for an annual checkup.
  • Prioritize exercise and movement breaks.
  • Eat healthy foods that you enjoy.
  • Go to bed when you’re tired, and make sure you get enough sleep.
  • Check in on your mental health, and ask for help if you need it.
  • Avoid unhealthy things like smoking and excess drinking.
  • Pause to meditate, relax and reboot when you need to.

Taking time for your health is good for you, your family and your community. National Women’s Health Week is a reminder that women need to put their health first, and not just for one day or week throughout the year, so start good habits this May that will last!
