Can You Recognize the Early Warning Signs of a Stroke?

Joyce Knestrick, PhD, CRNP, FAANP

Every 40 seconds, someone has a stroke. Too often, victims don’t recognize the signs, or wait to see if the symptoms go away before seeking emergency treatment, but this is the wrong approach. During a stroke, your brain loses 1.9 million cells a minute, and delayed treatment increases the chance of lingering speech difficulties, memory loss, behavioral changes or worse, death.
If you experience these stroke warning signs, call for help immediately:

  1. Blurred vision or seeing double.
  2. Numbness or the feeling of pins and needles in your arm or other extremities.
  3. Slurred speech.
  4. Wobbliness or poor balance.
  5. Confusion or loss of train of thought.
  6. A bad migraine.

As we age, it can be easy to chalk stroke symptoms up to just being exhausted, but don’t fall into that trap. If you suspect you are having a stroke, call 911. Every second counts!
